Mesh Bags for Nut Milk and Juicing at Publix

A few weeks ago, I ordered a nut milk bag from Amazon for about $12 because I couldn't find them at any local health food store. Tonight, at Publix, I found similar-looking bags selling for $1.99 for a three-pack. They are labeled as produce storage bags, but I picked them up hoping they might work for straining nut milk and juice.

Upon closer inspection (meaning . . . when I was finally able to open them), they are definitely not as fine a mesh as the nut milk bag I ordered. However, I decided to give them a try anyway.

I used them to make some cashew milk, and the milk came out very thick and frothy. Thinking it must be the larger holes letting out more pulp, I restrained it through my nut milk bag - and it came out the same way. Maybe cashew milk is just thick???

In any case, I'm definitely going to continue to experiment. Even if I use two together to strain out even more, they're still a great price, and I'm sure they'll be useful. I'll definitely report back on how they work with almond milk (since I'm more used to that consistency) and juicing.

  1. This is great. I'm making almond milk tomorrow and using a splatter screen to strain. Will look for the bags at Publix next week. BTW, where are you getting your nuts for milk and the butters?

  2. I'm going to look for these when I go next. I was thinking that doubling them up might work.

  3. I'm very lucky that my Publix has bulk bins. For some reason, all the nuts are priced the same $7.99/pound. Not the greatest price for something like peanuts, but a pretty good deal for organic almonds!

    Tara, I'm thinking that doubling should work great - a minor inconvenience for a great price and the ease of getting them locally. :)

  4. Jess, be sure to check out paint-straining bags @ Home Depot, approx $1 each (tho' usually come 2-3 to package, I think). That is what my raw food teacher uses, and they are a very fine mesh.

    BTW, my cashew milk isn't really any thicker than others, so thinking it's the weave... Good luck!

  6. $7.99/lb on all nuts is a great price! I priced the bulk section at Whole Foods and there was only one priced that low.

    @Virtual Victoria, Great tip!

  7. I think it's a great price for the organic almonds but not as much for some of the other nuts. I'm getting ready to do a post on Sustain (after my visit yesterday), and they have fabulous prices in their bulk bins! I got peanuts there to make peanut butter for $3.49/pound!
